False (or Tall) Oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius ssp. bulbosum)
#boggybrae #garden #wildplant for 2015: 150
I knew this count would speed up in summer! 1–100 between 1 January and 12 June, another 50 between 12 June and 11 July. Onward!
The grass is a metre or more tall (my sample was 115cm). It has dark, hairy nodules and rough leaves 7-9mm wide, hooded at their tips, and up to 19cm long.
Glume 1 (6.5mm long and 1-veined)
Glume 2 (9mm long and 3-veined)
Base of the lemma
Leaf ligule and auricles
Spikelets with long awns
The bulbous swellings at the stem base makes this Boggy Brae plant subspecies Arrhenatherum elatius bulbosum.
